Job description

The Riverside-San Bernardino County Indian Health Inc. is a consortium of tribal clinics dedicated to providing quality and culturally appropriate medical care to the tribal families of Southern California. The board of directors for RSBCIHI is comprised of delegates and alternate delegates from nine Southern California tribal nations. Primary and alternate delegates are elected by their tribe's general membership and serve on the Board to deliberate on clinic policies and events that benefit the health of their tribal communities.

Why did you choose this program?

I took every Philosophy class available at the community college level and transferred to Humboldt State University as a Philosophy major. I loved the campus and wanted to live in Humboldt, so this program was perfect for me.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

This program helped me develop the critical analysis skills necessary to evaluate reports, analyze data, and logically structure my academic writing. Through the environmental ethics and deep ecology courses, I became more attuned to the needs of environmentally sustainable lifestyles and policy decisions.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

I enjoyed the small class sizes and personal connections with the professors. The class debates were always a safe space to share open discussion from all perspectives while being aware of the need for inclusivity in perspectives. The course readings and lectures were enlightening and valuable in applications to many aspects of my life.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

The field of Philosophy is so diverse, there is an unlimited ability to apply what is learned through the program to be a more informed citizen. I would advise students to take seminar classes that truly interest them, and find ways to apply what they learn to any field they work in. The understanding of the gestalt perspective that motivates political differences, the ability to critically analyze data or reports, and the inclusion of environmentally sustainable practices have been applicable to all aspects of my life from being a more informed peer, continuing my education as a graduate student, and as a health board delegate.

Dr. Cannon is one of the best professors I've ever had. I always checked the course schedule for his classes before determining my class selection. Powell was a firebrand, and I'm thankful the Philosophy department allowed him to share his voice and interests; May he rest in peace. Dave Heise was a ball of energy, and I think of him often whenever the topic of political philosophy is brought up, as his class helped enhance my political perspective. I am forever thankful for that course. If I could have majored in only hanging out with Michael Goodman, I totally would have. He's like the best grandpa ever, and he explains Logic in the most passionate and approachable way. They made the philosophy department a great place to be. This department does so much to curate an amazing place to learn and grow.
